PRESS RELEASE: WONDERFULLY GEEKY INSTRUMENTAL DEBUT SPEEDING HOME IS OUT ON (XYZ) LABEL
De Moi released his instrumental debut Speeding Home under (xyz, looking for a label) publishing house today. The work on this album began early in 2020 in the foothills of the White Carpathians. “The record musically takes from ambient, jazz, neoclassial and dream-pop, intersecting beautifully with bits from each of the above and colliding into what is probably the most dream-like tune in my recent memory” (From a review of Music Dances When You Sleep)
The series of singles were successful with foreign critics and reached hundreds of playlists. Above all, Room for Doubts, This Letter of Mine, and Enamoured II resonated internationally. Single Room for Doubts established itself in France as part of the Unknown Planets compilation of the Parisian publishing house StillMuzik. This Letter of Mine was released in Russia as part of the compilation Ideas for Pop Producers to Steal by 56 Stuff. And last but not least, the ambient single Enamoured II was well-received by British critics in particular and gained a number of positive reviews there.
“Patient and elaborate, the songs swing you in on their modular-synth drones, further expanding the lucid horizon with a sequence of captivating, unique sounds appearing all over the spectrum. The production of the tune is wonderfully geeky too. Each sound was placed carefully and with plenty of expertise. Delightful, lucid, dreamy - treat yourself.” (Music Dances When You Sleep)
“Enamoured II is a deeply emotive piece. It has a hissing wash in the background, and everything revolves slowly. But it also has heart—an organic texture in among the machine-made sounds. Synths throb like some sort of pulsating life force. And it quivers with emotion. Beneath the calm is boiling humanity.” (Acid Ted blog)
“De Moi’s Room for Doubts belongs to the broader instrumental hip-hop field but also chillwave (acoustic chill-hop perhaps?), while it differs since the artist ideally combines acoustic instruments with electronic elements glowing with quality. The warm chords and the melodies unleashed, take the listener on a 144 second trip: a brief escape from the sad reality, which is utterly needed.” (Last Day Deaf)
WHO'S DE MOI
“Although it may seem like a weird thought at first, studying aesthetics of music, mastering a variety of instruments, and incorporating mathematics are all ways for me to evoke the emotions I want to evoke.”
De Moi (= Vojtech Vesely) is a music composer who lives and works in the foothills of the White Carpathians, as well as in Prague, Czech Republic. He studied mathematics and natural science in addition to his time spent studying music at Charles University in Prague. He’s continued to study music composition and aesthetics on his own since then.
Vojtech has been composing since 2007, creating music for films, theatrical productions, and computer games, on top of his personal projects, De Moi (lo-fi hip hop, chillhop, ambient) and Billow (dream pop). His compositions have appeared alongside some of today’s biggest musical names featured on the highly-influential channel LA BELLE MUSIQUE.
While De Moi is a solo instrumental project, Vojtech’s other outlet, Billow, is a three-piece dream pop band. Their debut album, Maps, was released in 2017 on Slovakian cassette label Z Tapes. The acoustic lo-fi record received a warm reception from Czech critics; Beehype ranked it the 5th-best Czech album of that year. Vojtech has played nearly 70 concerts with Billow since then, including the Colours of Ostrava festival and Beseda u Bigbítu. The group has also played in support of Russian post-punk band Motorama. They also toured Germany, Austria, and Slovakia and, in 2019, Billow released their sophomore album, Seascape, also on Z Tapes.
DE MOI’S PHILOSOPHY AND APPROACH TO WORK: “MUSIC IS FILLED WITH MATHEMATICAL ELEMENTS”
“We hear a lot about the beauty of music, we hear about the abstract charm of mathematics. Nonetheless, we tend to forget about the beauty of mathematics and the logical structure of musical compositions. These two top branches are inseparable parts of the human spirit and have a number of contact points. Although it may seem like a weird thought at first, studying aesthetics of music, mastering a variety of instruments, and incorporating mathematics are all ways for me to evoke the emotions I want to evoke.”
